Managing Your Mental Health from Diagnosis to Treatment

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that significantly impact daily functioning and quality of life. It is most diagnosed in and associated with children, however, ADHD can persist through adolescence and into adulthood, and is often under or misdiagnosed in adults.

It’s important to note that the symptoms of ADHD are unique to the person and they may not display the obvious signs of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulse control. These symptoms can impact many aspects of one’s life, including personal relationships, work, academic performance, and more. A child or adult is likely to be struggling with ADHD if they display patterns of:

  • Forgetfulness
  • Frequent daydreaming
  • Difficulty paying attention and/or following instructions
  • Repeatedly making the same mistakes
  • Organizational difficulties
  • Excessive talking and/or fidgeting
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulties with decision-making or self-regulation

Diagnosis and Testing

At Larson Mental Health, our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) can facilitate the process for properly diagnosing ADHD and/or any coexisting conditions. Because many ADHD symptoms can present similarly in other conditions, the diagnosis process must be comprehensive and will differ between children and adults.

For children, our ADHD evaluation process involves extensive information gathering of rating scales and detailed observations of the child’s behavior from multiple sources such as parents, teachers, and other caregivers. We may additionally conduct interviews, review medical history, and assess the child’s developmental and academic progress. Psychological testing may be administered to assess cognitive functioning and identify any coexisting conditions.

For adults, the evaluation process is very similar to the process for children, however these evaluations focus on the person’s history of symptoms, functional impairments, and childhood behaviors. Our healthcare professionals will review current symptoms and their impact on various aspects of life and may conduct additional interviews with family members or close friends.

Building upon the subjective data, our practitioners will perform objective tests that can be used to make an ADHD diagnosis. We utilize an FDA-approved evaluation called QbTest, which provides valuable, objective information that our clinicians use in conjunction with the information gathered earlier to make an accurate diagnosis. It’s a great diagnosis tool for people ages 6-60, which is generally covered by insurance. It takes roughly 30 minutes to complete and can be done remotely at home.

Once a diagnosis of ADHD is established, our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners can develop an appropriate and personalized treatment plan for you. We’ll find an appropriate solution to effectively mitigate symptoms and improve your quality of life through a combination of medication management, talk therapy, and lifestyle modifications.

Many prescribed medications for ADHD fall under the stimulant category, such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) and amphetamines (Adderall), which work by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain to improve attention, focus, and impulse control. Our psychiatric ADHD specialists in Colorado may also prescribe non-stimulant medications, like atomoxetine (Strattera) or bupropion (Wellbutrin), for psychiatric treatments as some people do not respond well to or cannot tolerate stimulant medications. Our team will closely monitor your progress and carefully assess the effectiveness of your ADHD medications, so we can adjust dosages as necessary and implement strategies to address any side effects.

For many patients, a combination of medication for ADHD and talk therapy has proven to be the most effective remedy for many symptoms. At our Boulder clinic, patients can engage in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other behavioral interventions with our on-site therapist. Through this approach with a psychiatric ADHD specialist in Boulder, patients can develop practical strategies to better manage symptoms and improve various skills or areas of difficulties like organization, time management, and more.

In addition, we may integrate EndeavorRx as a part of our patients' ADHD treatments. EndeavorRx is an FDA-authorized prescription digital therapeutic that targets cognitive processes involved in attention functions. It's a safe, nonpharmacologic approach to treating ADHD, and we are proud to offer this treatment in conjunction with our other treatment strategies.

We may also recommend implementing a series of lifestyle modifications like adding structure to routines, using organizational tools, practicing stress management techniques, and more. These minor tweaks to everyday life can make ADHD symptoms much easier to manage.
